Ms McDermid, best known for her series of crime novels featuring the character Dr. Tony Hill, revealed on Twitter that the burglars had stolen her black Audi A6 estate in addition to her son’s Xbox console.
The 60-year-old, originally from Kircaldly, Fife, is currently involved in a tour of the United States.
Ms McDermid tweeted: “If the gob****** who burgled my house and stole my car are on Twitter– I hope 2016 is as s***** as you deserve.”
First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon, offered her support, tweeting: “sorry to hear this. Hope everyone ok x.”
Val McDermid, the best-selling crime author, may be best known for her tales of fictional detective work, but now she faces the prospect of cracking a case of her own.
The Scottish author, who has sold more than ten million novels, has revealed that her home, in Stockport, Greater Manchester, was burgled this weekend.
McDermid is currently in America, on a book tour, but said that thieves had taken her Audi A6 estate, and that her partner and child had been left to deal with the burglary.
